Hardstyle
Definition first ??
Hardstyle is a genre of music which is closely related to nu style gabber and hard trance. The average tempo is between 140 and 150 bpm. Its most widely use by the dance namely the Melbourne Shuffle and the Jumpstyle.
Currently the Hardstyle Category is split into 3 subcategories:
# Dutch Hardstyle - Typically harder and darker than other hardstyle, mostly known for its hard base line, wicked kicks and dirty vocals.
# Italian Hardstyle - More serious, usually has a bigger melodic breakdown and typically 'gangsta'-themed lyrics.
# Nu-Style - Usually deeper and more complex than early hardstyle, mashed out with samples and lower use of reverse bass and/or reverb. The bass is fillterd and distorted to creat a grungey bass drive. Many of hardstyle's biggest DJs, especially those from Holland, have evolved into Nu-Style.

Re: Hardstyle
hey really nice mix there brianwkh, I generally only get to (over) hear the same old trax on shuffle vids. Nice to hear some variety.
Quite liked gabba and hardcore when it emerged 1995 ish. Still got a bunch of Mokum 'Fuckin Hardcore' cd's http://www.mokumrecords.com/root.php
Madrod, used to do a great hard type radio show. TVE. Tronik Voodoo Exorcism. Here's some links to his first shows in 1993, you might enjoy. Some great trax, often just a hand full of pressings type releases.
Rods now a big TV star in Thailand, doing a sort of Rods guide to underground Bangkok or something I dunno, I've never seen the show, I'd love to. it's on satellite. He told me the name but in Thai, expecting me to remember, he had one of his 'now concentrate Garry,' looks on his face. and of course now I remember the look, but not what he said )
But Rod did sneak in a visit to Shifter earlier this year. He offered to drop by. Rod's in SG and JB quite often. He's interested in meeting up with some teams and crews.
Anyhow great mix. thanx for the link.
These mp3 are taken direct from the radio broadcast to audio cassette early 1993 - then digitally remastered 2007. Not a bad sound for 15 year old cassettes
Each mix is about 50 min long. From the first TVE show and a few bits from the second show the following week.
This 1st part has the end of the show before Rod's. It features a couple tracks we generally called trance then (Psy-trance, goa-trance) it was the most popular music style at underground parties 91/93 along with Detroit Techno, and were pretty much the soundtrack the shuffle was created to dance too. I've included them to contrast what was around at the time and what Rod was doing which was very different

Re: Hardstyle
hey no worries with the quality, it's fine. I used to work in a 'bong shop' as we call them in Melbourne (bong=water pipe) The owner Gadi was an Israeli guy who fled the draft and went to Amsterdam in the late 1970's. Then moved to Melbourne in the ealry 1980's. Melbourne has a large Dutch community living in the hills of Melbourne. Tulip farms and windmills everywhere
Gadi used to sell bootleg acid mixes on reused audio cassettes from under the counter in his shop. We were dubbing them off all the time. The quality was crap, but it was just so great to hear the music.
