TUTORIAL

Shufflers aren't too keen on rules, creative freedom is favoured more than a fixed set of steps, style, moves, music or clothing. You're not locked into any of them and can shuffle them around to suit yourself.

Which can all be a bit confusing to those new to shuffling.

So here's some general principles we agree on to get you started.

> The Melbourne Shuffle is a dance and art concept. It uses all sorts of moves or elements like building blocks, and you shuffle these moves and elements around to suit your mood

> The Melbourne Shuffle has 3 main genre's: Party, Rock and Goth. Each genre has it's own distinctive moves, fashion, art and lifestyles. New genre's are welcomed but they need to be around for a few years and supported by lots of shufflers to last.

> There are no fixed steps in shuffling. It is largely a free form dance tradition. Each shuffler has a personal collection of moves they shuffle around to suit their mood and setting.

> Shuffling skill is judged on the choice, sequence and presentation of the moves. Individual shufflers are encouraged to create their own moves to mix in with established moves.

> The Melbourne Shuffle has it's own unique dance pants called, PHATS. see www.msoPHATS.com

> Shuffling can be done anywhere at anytime, alone or with others. Original oldskool shufflers broadcast their moves on underground TV in the 1990's it started at TVU in 1992. Today, Youtube is the favored medium.

> Media Art whether live mixing or a fine edit is a large part of shuffling's presentation to mass audiences, first as Free-To-Air Television in Melbourne 2.5 million in the broadcast range, to youtube lots+ .

You can see the shuffling principles applied to video art with a disrupted narrative technique in a 1992 media art piece of mine called Neurenergen - A substance absorbed by the neurons to maintain their energy.

It was Broadcast as the TVU station ID once an hour for a year.
