This was just before the 2009 financial crash. Shuffling was huge in Maylasia, there were competitions with cash prizes for shuffling and lots of corporate sponsers happy to be involved.

Basically nobody had any objections to people doing a bit of exercise for good health, and if shuffling made that fun, well go for it.
