Re: PHATS History Chat
Mainly because of all the sewing of reflectors etc on the pants. The pants themselves need to be tough, like construction work clothes to stand up to the pounding of hardstyle.
The biggest problem is the Australan dollar exchange rate it makes phats cost a lot. Like what is about $140 in malaysia, is about $360 in Australia.
You can make your own, it's not hard. Just get any tough baggy pants, like camo's etc and sew your reflector stuff on.
It can be anything recycled like relfector vests worn on constructon sites etc. Just cut them into strips and sew them on.
If you can't sew, try and find a clothing repair or alteration shop in town. Dry Cleaners will usually know of some who do repairs for the cleaners. It's not a lot of work but sewing the full reflector gel is a bit tricky, but easy enough to learn. You just need a robust sewing machine or industrial sewing machine, like repair places have,.

Yeah, it just sucks, cause if you buy them off ebay, its 250 for the pants, another 35 for the suspenders, and then 58 shipping.

Oh lordy, sorry, XD. Yeah, the only issue is, if you don't know how to sew like me , or your not in a lot of money, it can be trickey.

Yeah, I'll try and find some, the only issue is finding a similar cut of pants to the phats, you know how they kinda cover your foot?

I use ghasts and ufos. great thing about ufo's are that you can turn em into backpacks if you wear shorts underneath and ghasts are super lightweight. both are also cheaper than most other types of denim phats.

Re: PHATS History Chat
We often made up a pair of phats just for ONE PARTY. So use a cheap pair of pants as the base them start sticking stuff on them that you like. You can use a hot glue gun for some things.
If your old pants are torn, then use patches or use the torn section as the feature.
It's fashion design done the way you dance. You don't have to be locked into just one pair of phats for ever. You have a phats collection, all with your own unique design aethetics - your taste.
I've got some work stuff to do over the next few days, but I'll upload the pics of my phats, they were work overalls, that's where the braces/suspenders come from with modern phats.
You have so much freedom of movement without a heavy waist belt trying to hold up your pants. So comfortable - and tough. I have 2 pair of Yakka work overalls, made in Melbounre at the Yakka factory. Yakka is local slang for work Hard Yakka is very tough work, usually construction mining etc.
As they wore out I added patches fron the inside, so you had all the distressed denim look on the outside, without your pants falling apart or freezing your legs off in winter.
Over 10 years from new, they keep changing as I added patches - all hand sewn.
So the idea with phats is to apply the shuffle theory of movement, to design. Have a collection of shapes, colors, materials, icons etc that you like as your personal signature design.
Think of phats as art for your legs, like tatts. 3D, except you can remove the phats a lot easier than a tatt
3D as in the shape of the canvass, it's not flat its more like sculpture

Oh forgot, check out textile paints from craft shops. You can paint on highlight stitching around pockets or do full on art works on the legs.
Quite a few artists had screen printing workshops so designers could get their works screened onto the pants as well.
