When the C64 was launched by Commodore in 1982 it immediately set the standard for 8-bit home computers. Its low cost, superior graphics, high quality sound and a massive 64 KB of RAM positioned it as the winner in the home computer wars, knocking out competitors from the likes of Atari, Texas Instruments, Sinclair, Apple and IBM.

Selling over 30 million units and introducing a whole generation to computers and programming, the C64 shook up the video games industry and sparked cultural phenomena such as computer music and the demoscene. In recent years the C64 has enjoyed a spectacular revival manifesting itself once again as a retrocomputing platform.

yeah, but you needed a desk top computer and TV/Moniter to do it, before everything started shrinking.

It had a really simple programing language called BASIC which a 10 year old could learn just stumbling around, commands like RUN STOP DRAW YELLOW CIRCLE, really easy and it would draw line grafs as well as playing really annoyning sound samples like a mario bros tune, that you kinda missed if you turned it off during the game.

The Global Shuffle movie premier screening season was at FILE in SP Brasil, FILE is a prestigeous media arts festival with cutting edge 21cent art and lots of playing around with old analog and early digital gear. http://www.filefestival.org/hotsitesp/Documenta.aspx?language=en-us

The Melbourne Shuffle itself was created in a pirate TV station in Melbourne using this sort of pioneering digital technology.

C64 It was portable too. You could put it in your school bag with a bunch of audio cassettes which had the game data on and plug it in to a friends standard TV and play games. Couldn't do that with an apple or IBM. The C64 was really the first portable computer around the same time as the Sony Walkman did for audio. Portable meaning it worked ok after you moved it in a school bag again and again

You could wait 5 minutes at least for the game data to load from a standard audio cassette. I've still got my first computer a Music computer made by Yamaha in 1983 with one of Bills first Music software programs. It still runs today make great music with just 64k. It uses the standard Yamaha synth sound card as the voice module, not the computers sound

haha, oh don't worry I'll explain Smile . But when I've got a bit more time and I'll post some tracks I did around 1985/86. I'd use the computer live on stage too. I would announce the track, then press PLAY and jump off the stage and listen to it on the huge sound system with the audience. It was the computer and technology that was the star Smile

yeah, I do the works, I get bored easy, so I get cranky if I'm not working on something, and probably get up to mischief Smile

Check out Herbie Hancock [Rockit - Future Shock] demonstrating the Fairlight CMI on Sesame Street in 1983, it was the first usable computer sampler. There's some other great tracks as Herbie show the legendary producer Quincy Jones how to get funk from a computer. Plus Thomas Dolby, Herbie Hancock, Howard Jones, and Stevie Wonder live(ish) at the 1985? Grammy's I think
