Need Help designing a Crew Logo, or can you offer help ?

Okay, if you have a design in mind, the most common pro tools to get your logo completed are Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (drawing tool)

Here's where you can legally download graphic design software, and heaps of free trial and free-to-use design software 2D and 3D - all virus free and above board.

If you're stuck on a design here's some basic design strategies to get you started.

You need to think about this stuff anyway, so you might as well start with them while deciding on a design. Often new ideas will pop up as you're thinking about it.

These aren't carved in stone in your design process, it's just to get the ball rolling.

Design is a process of refinement to get the best possible image for your purposes. Don't be afraid to abandon a half developed idea, because you've found a better one. If you get too precious with a design you may not see it's faults.

If you can't decide on one set, then develop a range of ideas, and narrow down the choices further down the track.


1. Impression Think about the impression you want your logo to give. What is it that you want to convey to the person looking at it ? Is it just the crew name or do you want to include something about the crew's character?

2. Colours. How many colors do you want ? Do you want a simple colour scheme, say white on black background like for a hoodie, with red highlights ? Or do you want more colours or a full colour range.

3. Shape. What sort of shape do you want ? A circular, horizontal or vertical oriented shape ?

Your first idea may well be the best one. But don't rely on it, work on a few, test them for reproduction and scaling qualities, ie does it look good big, like when on the back of a hoodie and does it look good small, like a 100px sq avatar.

Then test them on friends who'll give you honest constructive feedback.

To broaden your ideas, try some 'visual stimuli'. Look at things that trigger the response you want or convey the meaning you want.

Google 'free clip art' and checkout whats around. Some may be of use to you as a mock-up or a sample logo. Something that gives a sketch of what you want your logo to look like, and you can develop your ideas from there.

For instance when I designed the MSO logo, I knew I needed the colours to compliment blue and green in it, because I had already chosen the blog and forum colours using what I call Kryptonite Green and a pale blue text.

I had also decided on a vertical format, because the logo would spend most of it's life in side columns of the blog and forum. Rather than a horizontal banner format.

So before I'd even thought about the content, those factors limited me, but also guided the design process to what would work.

if ya could, this is the design:

a dark gold eagle on top of a dark blue banner
a bright fluro green background with lightning type stuff going everywhere (bright blue lightning with red outline)
and in orange writing "Redeemers" at the top
"of" in the middle, prefferably not on the bird.
and down the bottom "Hardstyle"
and all the writing with a dark purple neon glow around it.

pretty pretty pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?

im getting the adobe acrobat 9 trial with no graphic designing experience. am i gonna die of confusion?

The adobe acrobat is a file sharing reader mostly for making and reading PDF (portable document file). So it won't give you any drama's, it's pretty straight forward.

You may be thinking of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, which are the industry standard design tools, all are made by the Adobe company. Adobe also make Flash (youtube standard).

Photoshop and Illustrator will be a challenge for beginners, but they both have excellent tutorials with the programs and lots of help forums for tips for different age and skill levels

When we say 'industry standard' we mean serious pro level. You can expect to spend 1-2 years fulltime study on both Photoshop and Illustrator at college to learn all the capabilities, or you can just focus on small areas of the programs to do what you're after, and learn the rest of the stuff later on.

The basics take a bit to get your head around, but once that's done you just keep refining your photoshop and illustrator skills, ie: practice

I've been using photoshop for 15 years or so and Amiga's Delux Paint for years before that. I still get stuck on unfamiliar tasks and that little 'help' button really does help.
