Re: Battle Brewing
because it means there's more for you to discover.
The battles are a series of shuffle challenges to testyour own ability. It gives you a benchmarch compared with your peers.
We're planning one for the end of January 2012, then another the end of March 2012.
The battle gives you a real life experience at meeting deadlines for productions. You plan your practice schedules to peak at battle time, making sure you've had the right combination of enough exercise and enough sleep to be ready to hit the ground shuffling.
Then see if you can repeat it and improve by the next one. It's a mental challange as well, you put yourself and reputation on the line, in public, not really knowing how good or bad the other shufflers are in the battle.
It's a time of great uncertainty, and you need to steel yourself to cope with it. It's as close to STAGE FRIGHT as you can get with youtube. You'll feel things you've never felt before and some will be good the rest will be bad.
This is when you learn the REAL shuffler in you. No where to hide, you make a public committment to compete, you find out real quick if you can stay the course, and you get bragging rights if you do. Because the battle is more with yourself to control and discipline yourself for a specific task in a specific time frame, with the objective to astound yourself and be better than you ever imagined.
We shuffle to express ourselves and it's also okay to impress ourselves too.

Re: Battle Brewing
So we do some standard shuffle moves then some random ones like these with the dice throw. You then have 14 days to make a vid and post it

So the idea is you do your own style and moves and there's this set of battle moves you each have to do, some how, and make it look good. Good being what people vote as being 'good'

Or we can add more complex sequences for advanced shufflers. The rules are decided on before each contest. So they can be adapted to focus on specific things if people want.

Garry? Is this a tournament? This is gonna be interesting! I like one on one battles! But I maybe cannot surivive 2 rounds since my style can get so repetitive!

Re: Battle Brewing
More or less a tournament, it's a group battle like a demolition derby But mainly as a 'LIVE' test of your nerves, stamina and creativity.
This is to put you under the same sort of pressure you WILL encounter when you do an audition, because the people auditioning you want to make sure you can handle the stress and demands required with performing. You maybe great when there's no pressure, but I have seen many experts withering in stunned shock at their first live gig, and blowing it for everyone else involved.
So this is like a cattle call as it's called in theatre. Open to all who feel up to it, or even those who want experience at it to test and improve themselves so they CAN handle the tough stuff.
When it comes to making a public committment putting your shuffling skills on the line for a public vote, there's LOTS more going on than just your shuffling moves. It's about your whole public persona.
Do you manage your nerves well, can you cope with the public attention and comments good and bad, do you just fall to pieces in panic (stage fright), do you chicken out before the end, or do you surprise yourself and perform on a whole different level - The Zone.
The Zone is a mix of things including adrenalin etc when you fly. All your training flows with ease and you end up doing things beyond your current ability.
This is tested over a couple of months, so it's not just game day, it's much bigger. Your moods will fluxuate, you'll have self doubt, you'll huddle in fear and at the end you will trancend, knowing that just completing the test is an important victory in itself.
You may discover a level of strength in yourself you never knew you had, because it's never been tested before. That's why we make the tests, so you KNOW if you can handle it, not just HOPE that you can handle it.
Best to think of the battle as a personal quest to test your resolve to harden your skin against public expectations good or bad, and focus mind on the purpose in the midst of overwhelming distractions.
You become the boss of yourself based on real life tests. And to prove it's not beginners luck, you may like to enter the next battle and see if you can improve on the first one.

Re: Battle Brewing
There won't be a battle until later this year, we're concentrating on getting the new msoPHATS store set up on this forum and releasing the GS1 dvd.
The battle is generally for more experienced shufflers to test their skills, most current forum members are still developing those basic skills, so this nth summer we'll be getting more advanced tutorials online to help with that.
