Re: trip to australia
Melbourne has some nice spots, the oldskool shuffle sites featured in Global Shuffle 1990:2010 are still there. If you're going to be in town, we can check our schedules and I can try to meet-up with you to show you some of them
About an hours drive out of town there's the Dandenong Ranges - 'The Hills' as locals call it, you can travel by public transport train to Belgrave and catch the Puffing Billy steam train to ride through the forest. all in a one day trip. or stay in the area while travelling, there's lots of short stay accomodation, B+B etc everywhere.

You'll have no problem with english language, it's the main language and we all have our different ways of speaking it as it's the second language to millions in Melbourne.
A lot of german (Bavarian mostly) and dutch folk live in the hills area and german is commonly taught in primary schools in Melbourne. Local supermarkets in the hills have a wide range of european produce and brands as well as Australian
